What are your options for private Cataract Surgery in Wanganui?

Bowen Eye Clinic offers a Cataract and Laser Eye Surgery clinic less than an hour drive away, in Palmerston North every second Thursday.  At this clinic we can provide all of your pre-assessment and post-operative follow up care by the same surgeon, Dr Reece Hall, who can perform your cataract operation at Crest Hospital also on a Thursday. Crest Hospital is on Carroll Street in Palmerston North and is the partnership between the previous Southern Cross Hospital and Aorangi Hospital.

What does a cataract assessment involve?

Cataract assessments are done in Bowen Eye Clinic’s Palmerston North clinic at Eyes on Broadway, 251 Broadway Avenue. The pre-assessment involves a full eye examination and takes around 30 minutes. Your eyes will be dilated using drops to examine your cataract and retina. Biometry measurements are then taken of the length of your eye and the shape of the front of your eye, which enables him to select the best intra-ocular lens for your personalised eye care.

What lens choice and focus do I have?

Dr Reece Hall will discuss with you what your preferred focus will be after the cataract surgery; near or far sight. Some people choose mono-vision where the dominant eye is focused for the distance and the non-dominant eye for close up activities such as reading.  There are a range of intra-ocular lenses that can be used to meet your vision needs, including toric intra-ocular lens that correct astigmatism. At Bowen Eye Clinic, Dr Reece Hall uses the latest Nidek topographic and wavefront analysis to help select the best intra-ocular lens for you.

Having your surgeon do your pre-assessment with you allows you to take the time to ask all of those questions that you have, discuss your expectations, the outcomes from the surgery and discuss risks or potential complications. At Bowen Eye Clinic we believe this is important as you need to have trust and confidence before you make the decision to proceed with your cataract surgery.

Cataract Surgery after care

Your post-operative care and all follow-up appointments can also done by Dr Reece Hall in the Bowen Eye Clinic’s Palmerston North clinic and are included in the surgical fee. After 4 weeks from your cataract surgery is the usual time to upgrade your glasses with your Optometrist and this can improve your sight another 5-10%. At Bowen Eye Clinic we also offer Laser Eye Surgery after cataract surgery if you wish to have perfect vision without glasses.
